WhatsApp Business API Pricing in India, Explained Simply (2026)
Meta charges per message, customer replies are free, and most businesses overpay because of how their messages are categorised. Here is the whole picture in plain English.
The WhatsApp Business API (officially the WhatsApp Business Platform, or Cloud API) is how serious businesses use WhatsApp: multiple team members, chatbots, automated reminders, CRM integration and the green tick. Its pricing confuses almost everyone, so here it is, simply.
The three layers of cost
- Meta’s message charges — paid per message you send using a template.
- Your provider’s platform fee — the software or partner (a BSP, or an agency like BluePeak) that runs your chatbot, inbox and automation.
- GST at 18% — applied on both.
Meta’s per-message rates for India
Since July 2025, Meta charges per delivered template message rather than per 24-hour conversation. Rates depend on the category of the message. Approximate India rates in 2026, before GST:
| Message category | What it is used for | Approx. rate (India, excl. GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Offers, launches, re-engagement, newsletters | about ₹0.86 per message |
| Utility | Order updates, booking confirmations, reminders, receipts | about ₹0.12 per message |
| Authentication | One-time passwords (OTPs) | about ₹0.12 per message |
| Service | Your replies when a customer messages you first | Free |
Meta revises rates periodically, and utility and authentication rates fall further at higher monthly volumes. Always check the current rate card in your WhatsApp Manager before you budget.
The rule that saves the most money: the 24-hour window
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer-service window opens. Inside that window your replies are free-form and, under the current model, free — and utility templates sent inside the window are generally not charged either. This is why a fast, always-on reply system is not only better for conversion; it is cheaper. Most of what a good chatbot sends happens inside that free window.
A worked example
Imagine a real-estate business that receives 1,500 enquiries a month. The chatbot replies to all of them inside the free window. It sends 1,500 site-visit reminders (utility) and one re-engagement message to 3,000 older leads (marketing).
- Replies to 1,500 enquiries: free.
- 1,500 utility reminders × ~₹0.12 = roughly ₹180.
- 3,000 marketing messages × ~₹0.86 = roughly ₹2,600.
- Total Meta cost: about ₹2,800 a month plus GST — far less than most people expect.
Where businesses overspend
- Sending reminders and confirmations as “marketing” templates instead of “utility”. Correct categorisation alone can cut costs sharply.
- Broadcasting to large, cold lists. Low engagement raises costs and can get your number’s quality rating downgraded.
- Paying a provider a high per-message markup on top of Meta’s rate. Ask how your provider bills.
- Ignoring the free window — replying slowly means you later need paid templates to restart the conversation.
Other things to know
- You need a phone number that is not active on the regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app (or you migrate it).
- Your business must be verified in Meta Business Manager for higher limits and the green tick.
- Templates need Meta approval, usually within minutes to a few hours.
- Customers must opt in, and you must honour opt-outs. A respectful system protects your number.
